Sandhya Metal Craft was founded by Rajib Kumar Maiti, a 48-year-old Dhokra artisan from Arit village in Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal. Rajib's family originally specialized in metal casting for making utensils, but after completing his graduation, he decided to pursue his own path. Inspired by the Dhokra art that surrounded him, Rajib set out to master this traditional craft.
In 2003, Rajib moved to Dariyapur, a village famous for its Dhokra artisans, where he spent four years refining his skills. In 2007, he returned home and, with a loan from the Khadi and Village Industries Commission, established Sandhya Metal Craft. He started with just three artisans, gradually growing his team to nine. Rajib’s dedication and mastery of Dhokra art have earned him the state award three times, in 2005, 2007, and 2008.
Sandhya Metal Craft specializes in a wide range of Dhokra products that go beyond mere functionality, embracing artistic expression and cultural significance. Their collection includes intricately designed cutlery like spoons and forks, beautifully crafted organizers, tribal statues, divine idols, candle stands, hangers, and door handles. Each item is a testament to the artisans' exceptional craftsmanship and commitment to quality, reflecting the rich heritage of the Adivasi community.
Rajib’s vision for Sandhya Metal Craft is not just about business growth; he is driven by a desire to create livelihood opportunities for others and to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Adivasi community through his work.
